When research has been conducted on the health benefits of cacao one of the benefits is something that anyone who eats chocolate that is over 65 percent regularly knows, but might not have recognized it. That is the ability to act as an anti-depressant, and this occurs because of certain nutrients that are natural in the cacao bean.

One of the studies was done by an independent research done by the French ETAP-Applied Ethology, Centre de Recherche en Pharmacologie. The study that was done produced the data that proved the antidepressant effect of cacao, which was administered in two doses in an internationally recognized and validated, ethical and ethological behavioral animal test over a two week period. This study concluded that the same effects were comparable to the effect that is obtained with standard antidepressant products, without the side effects. They believe the anti-depressant effect can be attributed to the amount of polyphenols in the cacao bean.
One of the other studies done that showed similar results was funded by the Barry Callebaut AG and the data once again proved the anti-depressant like effect in rats that were being studied that could be similar reactions to humans. The data was published in Nutritional Neuroscience and found the source of the cacao been nutrients responsible was polyphenols.
